There are several ways to create a pom-pom and there are even tools made for this specific reason. But if you'd like to make one up pretty quickly (without running to several different craft stores to see if they even have the tools in stock) then follow along and let me know if it was pretty helpful!
Supplies
a) Yarn (I use medium worsted weight)
b) Extra long piece of same yarn (used for binding). I’ve used a different color to better show you
c) Sharp scissors
Step 1
Wrap the yarn at least 30 times around the thickness of your first and middle finger. The bigger and fluffier you want your pom-pom the more wraps you’ll need.

Slip the extra piece of yarn through your two fingers and bind it around the yarn. Very carefully slip the wrap off your fingers (with the binding piece of yarn still in place) and knot the binding yarn securely around your wrap.
I used a crochet hook to pull the yarn through. :P |
At this point you can grab the black pieces and just pull it off your fingers. |
Double knot, triple knot! Do what you have to to secure this little bugger! |
Step Three
Use your VERY sharp scissors and cut through all the loops at both the top and bottom of the wrap
Step Four
Fluff out your pom-pom, trim it up and if you like the way it looks, you’re finished!
You can use it for little cheerleaders or accessories for a spirit board sign etc.
Make your tying yarn (the black yarn) long enough to attach it to your project |
But if you need this pom-pom for your Amigurumi animals, like the little Teacup Bunnies, then continue on to the Fifth Step.
Step Five
After you’ve cut your loops, use your slicker brush to VERY GENTLY brush out the ends of your yarn. What I do is hold sections at a time and brush out the tops of the pom then eventually work towards the middle.
Some pieces of yarn may come out when brushing, but you have to be very gentle with this part or you’ll yank out all of your pieces and have to start all over again.

Tada! You’re finished and have a very fluffy, almost cotton ball-like tail! You can make them big or small and in any color or type of yarn!
