Okay, so the pattern I've been trying to work on is for a co-workers' birthday in April. It's the Pomeranian from RomanSock. My Joann's Store does not carry wool yarn in beige and orange, so I've decided to wing it with the Vanna's Choice in beige and orange. Now of course, I'm not getting the same fluff (not even close to the fluff) as I would with a decent wool yarn, but I'm getting some.

The 2nd'leg' isn't brushed. |
But anyhow...this picture is of 100% acrylic yarn brushed. It just looks like a light fluffing, but hopefully I'll still get the affect of a fluffy dog when the project is finished.
I tried to brush out 70-ish % wool of the sock yarn (the only yarn Joann's had that was close to what I was looking for-lame), but it's just to thin for this project and the stitches were pulled out easily and the yarn just didn't hold a good shape like acrylic did.
I really want to get my hands on a good wool yarn to just try the brushed effect again. Hopefully I'll be able to work on this project this weekend!
